Which Patterned Tights Are The Most Flattering?

Patterned tights: just how flattering are they? And which patterns are the best ones to buy? As the owner of a pair of what I’d call “okay” legs (they certainly won’t rival Blake Lively’s, but with the right hosiery and heels, they look presentable with a short skirt), I thought it would be interesting to compare several pairs and find out what flatters a pair of average legs the most.

Over the last 12 months I’ve gathered together a bit of a collection of patterned tights and have been wearing them on the blog with various outfits, as seen below (yes I seem to have a thing for black and pink…?!)

So using the tights that I already own, I’ve simply photographed them all with me wearing a neutral dress and heels to see how the various patterns compare. I have them in other colours too, but I stuck to black for the purposes of this experiment. Read on for my scientific analysis* of what the different patterns do for my legs – and see which pair I crowned the overall winner at the end.

*it wasn’t scientific at all, but I think you already knew that…!

Fishnets / swirly dots

1. Standard fishnets (similar), 2. Swirling dot fishnets (similar, sort of a reverse of mine)

Starting with the classic patterned tights: fishnets. I have to admit, I haven’t worn fishnets in a very long time. They were very popular in the 90s and 00s, and although they haven’t gone completely out of style, they have been replaced by the fancier patterns of recent years. They do the same job as sheers but are infinitely more flattering – you get that dark outline but your legs don’t go that unflattering flat greyish colour.

The ones on the right – the swirling dots – are much more flattering again, as my less-than-perfect knees have been effectively hidden by the pattern. I haven’t got those gorgeous “triangle” knees as I call them, and my calves aren’t the slimmest, but the way the dots swirl round and down give the impression my legs are much more shapely than they actually are.

Crochet pattern herringbone stripes

3. Crochet pattern fishnets (I love these ones), 4. Herringbone stripes (similar)

I’ve worn these crochet pattern fishnets a few times on the blog now (here, here and here), and I’ve always considered them my favourites. You have to make sure the pattern is perfectly in place down the front of your leg when you put them on, and what I love most is that they give the illusion of a shapely kneecap if you place the pattern right on top of your knee (I missed it a bit here – the top oval shape should have been a little further down).

Even better is the herringbone stripe pattern – these work like go-faster stripes! Vertical stripes alone wouldn’t look as good; the zigzag of the herringbone breaks up the stripes and makes my legs look slimmer and more toned (they appear slightly darker than number 3).

Gipsy fan / animal print

5. Gipsy fan net (I love these ones), 6. Animal print (similar)
The final two are the boldest patterns here; starting with the fan net on the left, my legs are widened somewhat by the large pattern (it looks a bit like lots of smiling faces)! So I think I prefer to wear this bolder pattern with a longer skirt as worn with the leather midi skirt at the beginning of the post, then you get a hint of pattern rather than a whole great smack-in-the-face pattern.

The same goes for the animal print, though I think these are more flattering than the fan net. They actually make my legs look flatter (i.e. less three-dimensional) with more of a dark outline. I haven’t actually worn these out before – they were a freebie from a blogger event and I didn’t think they did my legs any favours. But now having seen them in the photos with an objective eye and in comparison to the other tights, I think I may just venture out in them.

So that’s my tights put to the test and compared – which pattern is the winner? Well you may have a totally different opinion to me (which is fine!), but my preference for the tights that flatter my average legs the most is…

The swirling dot fishnets!

As I said they’re my choice for most flattering – the way the dots go down and round like a helter skelter seems to slim and shape my legs at the same time. But I think they’re all fun and I still want to wear them all, plus it’s great to have lots of choice for different outfits.

I’d love to know what you think: do you agree with my choice? Do you have a favourite pattern, and do you think (honestly) that they’re the most flattering? It will be interesting to hear your opinions…!

Ultra Violet: How to Wear the Colour of the Year

$

Back in December, the color experts over at the Pantone Color Institute boldly named Ultra Violet the 2018 color of the year!

The purple hue is described by Pantone as “a dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade” that “communicates originality, and visionary thinking that points us towards the future.”

Love it or hate it, this colour is popping up everywhere this year including in our wardrobes and with good reason. The ultra-violet shade is definitely worth incorporating into your everyday look!

The only question that remains is how? Fear not! I have 5 ways to help you incorporate Ultra Violet into your wardrobe no matter your level of style experience.
Here are 5 ways to wear Pantone’s 2018 colour of the year!
For the fashion wallflower:
1. Accessorize with it

Ease your way into the Ultra-Violet craze with the help of a few trendy accessories. No need for a head-to-toe Ultra Violet look! Simply incorporate a pair of earrings, a purse or even a scarf in the purple hue in your everyday looks for an on-trend look that won’t fail.
2. Try Ultra Violet separates

From sweaters to skirts, you’ll find Ultra Violet pieces everywhere this season. Experiment with separates by simply incorporating one Ultra Violet piece into your daily look. A sweater in the purple hue easily pairs with a jean skirt and other neutral palettes.
For the fashion expert:
3. Wear it with metallics

For a luxurious look, Ultra Violet can be paired with golds or other metallics. For example, an easy outfit combination could consist of an Ultra Violet skirt and a shimmery top. Try this style for an evening look that is sure to make heads turn.
4. Wear it with other bold colour combinations

Ultra Violet also pairs well with other colours for a bold look that’s perfect for Spring/Summer 2018. Greens can provide an elegant finish when combined with this purple hue. A pop of red combined with Ultra Violet is also a winning colour combination.
5. Play with textures and materials

Finally, play with materials to wear the Ultra Violet shade in various settings. Wear it in a velvet material for an evening look or in your athleisure wear for a more modern outfit.

How will you wear the 2018 colour of the year?

Patterned Tights Under Shorts: A Quick Style Guide

Tights under shorts, a style you either love or hate. What’s not to love in this style? It’s a pure spring style. Right as many people are ditching the tights with the arrival of Spring, we see this season as the most amazing time to show off legwear. As days get warmer, skirts and trousers get shorter. Still, some days get colder or rainy, so going bare leg is never the right choice at this time of the year. Spring is the season to prove you’re a fan of hosiery.

How to prove you lose it for a pair of tights? One of the best ways is wearing patterned tights under shorts. We know many of you are fans of this style, which is not only practical but also really cool. So, we’ve created this quick guide to show you our favourite patterned tights to wear under your shorts and skirts.
Let’s start with the basics: Wearing fishnets under your shorts!

If we had to choose a single style of patterned tights under shorts for Spring or Summer, it’d have to be a pair of fishnet tights. All fishnets are perfect to wear with shorts, from micro-nets to whale nets. Our favourite for the season would be the Trasparenze fishnets above. The reason, its wonderful pastel colours!

Peonia is really close to the colour everyone’s been talking about in the last year: Millennial pink. Do you know what colour is meant to be hot in 2019? Lilac! Just like the Glicine tone in these fishnets. A coincidence? We don’t think so!

Wear them with all kinds of shorts: denim, leather, suede, cotton… even crochet and lace shorts! If you don’t feel like wearing pastel coloured tights, you can go for black, nude, navy or red fishnets, instead. There’s plenty of choices. Still, some combinations seem to be especially hot this season.
The combo of the season: Fishnets and dots

When Cecilia de Rafael told us about its new fishnet style, we didn’t look back and went straight for it. It’s not a secret that we, at UK Tights, love polka dot tights. Imagine how amazing we felt when we saw our two favourite patterns, nets and dots, all together in one style. Pure perfection!
Right on trend: Geometric patterned tights

Geometric inspiration: Oroblu Knot Fishnet Tights

Not only spots are on trend these days. Diamond patterned tights are super popular both for opaque tights and fishnet styles. Well, actually, geometric patterns are, in general, super popular these days. A reminiscence of the prints of the 70’s maybe?

All things explained, it shouldn’t come as surprise to you the fact that any fishnets with a geometric pattern are being hugely popular in 2018. These Oroblu fishnets in the picture are the perfect example or how a geometric pattern, a hexagon, can make a lovely pair of tights. These fishnets look fab with plain shorts with minimal style or denim. Nothing too complicated that could steal the attention from your wonderful pins!

Still, do you think red tights are too much for you? Don’t worry, the Oroblu Knot tightsare available in black, Marine 10 and Sun.
We aren’t forgetting about the lace tights!

Of course not! A guide about patterned tights under shorts couldn’t miss a pair of lace tights. We have gone for a summery version of them by Wolford. These tights are available in both black and white, but we think these tights in white are shouting out ‘Summer’!

Other legs styles you can wear with shorts and skirts:
Polka dots, of course! If we haven’t included them in our list is only because we want you to try fresh new styles. Dotty tights under shorts are always a good idea!
Coloured sheer tights! Both pastels and bright tones are hot this year, so let’s free your imagination!

What of these styles are you going to try first?

False Myths About Tights You Need To Stop Believing

$

There are too many urban legends and false myths about tights out there. You surely must have heard people claiming that they can’t stand tights or they prefer not to wear them because they are not comfortable to wear. We are here to help unveil those false myths about tights. What’s true? What’s just an urban legend? Keep reading to find out!
False Myth No 1: Tights are uncomfortable to wear

If you are reading this post, you already know it isn’t true that all tights are uncomfortable. This is the most extended false myth about tights by far. We aren’t saying that any tights you buy will automatically feel like a second skin, just like any pair of shoes won’t neccessarily fit you. That’s why buying the right pair and the right size for you is vital.
When your tights slip down: This usually happens when your tights are worn off, especially with budget hosiery brands (you’ll rarely see this in a pair of Wolfords, for instance). If your brand new tights slip down, you probably got the wrong size. Either they are too short for you or the waistband is too tight/to loose to stay in place.
When your tights feel uncomfortable in the toes: That means you should buy a size bigger, as those tights are probably too short for you. Sometimes this issue is related to the previous one we’ve discussed. When your tights are too short for you, they slip down. As you notice this and to prevent them from rolling down, you’ll pull your tights over and over. After a few hours, your toes will start to dig into your tights (particularly your big toe) and ruin your tights. We hate when this happens, that’s why we always ask our customers to get the right size. Remember every hosiery brand has different sizing and you should always double check that you’re getting the right for your height and weight. Having the right size will make a huge difference!
When your tights feel itchy: You should look at the composition of the item. Maybe try a similar product in a different brand. Some brands offer natural fibre hosiery, manufactured using skin-friendly materials, such as cashmere or cotton. Some people with sensitive skin find nylon too itchy. It is always a good idea to hand-made wash your tights with a soft neutral wash (such as Wolford wash, Soak wash or, even any neutral soap you have at home).
False Myth No 2: Pregnant women cannot wear tights

This is absolutely false. We’ve discussed in a previous post here, at the UK Tights blog. If you are a mum-to-be, check out our specific post, where we discuss the False Myths About Maternity Tights.
False Myth No 3: Only slim women can wear tights
Glamory Satin Matt 20 Tights, available up to size UK 36

This is absolutely false. We have tights for the tall, for the short, for the slender and for the curvy people, but also for all women and men. Yes, many men also wear tights.

If you are after a pair of plus size tights, you have a few great brands, such as Glamory or Cette, but also most of the brands we stock have considered every person has a different body shape.

So, Pretty Polly, Trasparenze and Charnos, amongst others, have specific ranges for plus size hosiery, and other brands, such as Wolford, Silky, Miss Naughty or Cecilia de Rafael, manufacture their hosiery in X-Large, XX-Large, etc.
False Myth No. 4: All tights are easy to ladder

Are you a tights-destroyer? You’re not alone. Some people seem to be unable to wear a good pair of sheer tights without destroying them. Other times it’s our new pair of shoes what ruins our hosiery.

Eg. when your boots have a side zip that keeps digging into your tights until they’re ruined. Or those summer sandals that ladder any tights under 10 denier you dare to wear.

We do hate when this happens, but, unfortunately all that’s left for us to do is avoiding all those situations. For instance, be careful with any velcros, avoid crossing your legs (as you can pull your tights with your shoes without even realising), etc. If you have a cat or a dog, try change clothes before playing with your pets.

You can also get yourself some ladder-resist tights (also known as run-resist or ladder proof tights), which are not completely indestructible but won’t run even if you make a hole on them. Some opaque styles are very difficult to ladder. We’ve tried it with the Couture Ultimates range and we didn’t manage to ladder them; not even when we tried on purpose!

A quick last-minute tip to avoid a run totally ruining your tights is to apply a little bit of transparent nail polish around the whole as soon as it happens. This will prevent the ladder from extending.
Other false myths about tights and misconceptions:

We get asked about this a lot and we can absolutely confirm: There’s no such thing as tights without a seam on the toes. They simply don’t exist. If you find them, please, let us know and we’ll buy tons of them. The closest you can go is these Pierre Mantoux ultra sheer tights with an under-toe seam, which our customers find very comfortable, judging for the 5 stars they’ve given them.

About the 2 denier tights: Some customers have asked us in the past why they keep seeing 2 denier tights out there, but we don’t sell them. The truth is, 5 denier is the lowest most manufacturers go (many of them actually don’t manufacture any hosiery under 7-8 denier). So, if you see 2 denier tights, make sure they don’t come with the word ‘appearance’ attached.

You’ll find many sheer tights that have an ultra-sheer appearance (good quality brands and budget brands). After all, what’s wrong with buying a pair of thicker (and, hence, more durable) tights that look and feel like ultra sheer tights?

Do you need us to solve any questions about hosiery? Do you know of any other false myths or misconceptions we should clarify? Leave your questions in the comments below and we’ll add them to this list!
